Detection of SARS-CoV-2 (Novel Coronavirus)

End-to-end research solution for SARS-CoV-2 pathogen detection by real-time PCR.

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as MERS  and SARS. Official names have been announced for the virus responsible for COVID-19 (coronavirus disease).

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), previously known as “2019 novel coronavirus”, is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.  

Currently the standard diagnostic method is real time PCR.
Thermo Fisher Scientific has developed real-time PCR kit for the detection of RNA from SARS-CoV-2 pathogen. The kit which utilizes Applied Biosystems TaqMan Assay technology to provide specific, sensitive, and accurate results is optimized for use on the Applied Biosystems QuantStudio 5 and 7500 real-time PCR systems, using MagMAX Viral/Pathogen Nucleic Acid Isolation kits

We currently have two solutions for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 pathogen using real-time PCR:TaqMan 2019nCoV Assay Kit v1 (singleplex assay) and TaqMan SARS-CoV-2 Assay Kit v2 (multiplex assay).
As viruses mutate and spread, specificity to both the current virus and future mutations is necessary. Our multiplex assay provides highly sensitive and specific detection.

In order to reduce similarity to other coronavirus strains, both kits target three areas:

  • ORF1ab
  • N protein
  • S protein

In general, the ORF1ab and N protein regions do show some similarity against the newly submitted pangolin CoV and existing bat SARS CoV. This makes S protein an ideal region for both screening and confirmation because of its reduced homology to other similar coronavirus strains.
